Joshua's winning speech from the Year 5/6 Speech Competition
Homework! Bullies! I am sick of it! Naughty children distracting me from my learning. Teachers thinking they know everything. Especially what is best for us. So are you tired of going to school? Well I am! Home education can be your future school!
Think about all the things that make school bad. Lots of children can get hurt, scared and tired of going to school. Now you can wake up half an hour later, take out whatever you want for lunch and spend way more time with your mum and dad!
First of all you won’t learn as much at school compared to learning at home. It is true! Larger class sizes mean teachers have less time to spend with individual children! But learning at home means you get one-on-one attention learning with your mum and dad. What would you choose? Boredom at school or learning more at home? Home would be my first choice because who wants to be bored?
Bullying, a big problem in schools. Bullying can make children scared about going to school as they are afraid they will be bullied again. Have you ever been bullied? Bullying is terrible and children can feel lonely, unhappy, frightened, unsafe and think that there must be something wrong with them. But do bullies live in your house? No! Bullies can’t bother you if you learn at home.
Have you ever struggled to learn in class? All children are unique and so develop and learn in different ways. Some children learn better by listening, others by doing things practically and some by reading information. At home you also have the freedom to spend more time on subjects you are interested in, not just what teachers think you should learn. It is your parents who know how and what you should learn because they are the people that have been looking after you every day! Not your teachers!
Would you like to be another Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln or Leonardo da Vinci? These are only a few of many famous people who were homeschooled. Learning at home can be better than school in lots and lots of ways. No large class sizes and no bullies. You can learn in your own way, at your own pace and you are even able to work in your pyjamas!
