Adjusting to the First Weeks of School Print E-mail

Going to school for the first time or going back to school after a break, can be an emotional time for children. As a parent you can help by talking about the positive aspects of school and promote school as a great place to be.

Some important messages: (Source Principals' Digests -Hamilton)

  1. Establish regular bedtime and wake-up routines.
  2. Celebrate the start of school with a special meal or outing.
  3. Children normally shed a few tears on the first day. Try not to extend your stay in the classroom. Children normally settle down very quickly once you leave and best rest assured we would ring you if they didn't.
  4. Talk to your child and explain where they are going and for how long.
  5. Encourage your child to build friendships in their class.
  6. Trust your own judgement and talk to the teacher if you feel there are problems. It is best to clear these up in the early stages rather than let the issue grow.
  7. Encourage your child and spend time each evening listening to their reading, or write a story together. Remember to praise and encourage.
  8. Get organised - busy families need organisation so children and parents can keep their lives running smoothly.
