On Thursday 10th June Ashhurst and Whakarongo schools competed for the inaugural "Ashhurst-Whakarongo" challenge cup in Rugby, Netball, Football and Hockey. Rugby and Netball were held at Ashhurst with the other two codes taking place at Whakarongo school.

It was a successful day for the Ashhurst teams with junior Rugby winning 45-21and senior Rugby 68-14. Netball saw the junior teams fight out a 12 all draw with Whakarongo coming back strongly in the final quarter. Ashhurst convincingly took out the senior match 78-0 in what was a very polished display.Full credit to Whakarongo who never gave up trying. Ashhurst took out both junior and senior Football matches 10-0 and 10-1 respectively. The junior hockey match was hard fought with Ashhurst prevailing 6-5 after being down 5-1 at one stage. Ashhurst also took out the senior match 11-3 against the higher ranked Whakarongo team.

All matches were played in great spirit and we look forward to putting the cup on the line again. I'm sure next year will see closer matches as Whakarongo School has bigger number at the junior end of their school. As as these children filter through to the senior end of the school it will be "game on".
