The Orewa College debate is certainly an interesting one. Putting an i Pad on the stationery list is a huge assumption that all families can stump up with the funds associated with this. However, looking down the line I believe there will be a time when this will become the norm.
We recently received our written feedback from our ERO review. The report was excellent and as a result ERO will not be back for four to five years. This is the maximum time frame allocated for a follow up review so it shows just how confident they are in the systems we have in place at Ashhurst School. Often when reading these reports on the ERO website it is difficult to decipher between a great report and an average one, as they are quite bland.
The Ashhurst School PTA in association with the Manawatu 4WD Club recently hosted a “Shiny Truck” event which was well supported by our wider community. Drivers came from as far afield as Wellington, which considering the appalling weather leading up to the event was quite incredible.
You may have noticed the hall is looking a bit sick at the moment. In the process of preparing the hall for a new paint job the painters noticed a fair amount of rotten timber. We are currently trying to find the best way to get round this, as next year the hall is due for an fairly major upgrade anyway.
The ICT Expo was a huge success with over 100 people turning up to see what was on offer. Many of the children were operating stations such as "blue screening", ipads, animation, Mathletics and Kid Pix to name a few. The feedback was very positive and people were quickly able to see why the children are so engaged using these types of tools in their learning.
Last week we had a visit from the Education Review Office. They spent three days in the school looking at teaching practice and school documentation. The visit went very well and they were most impressed with what was happening both in the classrooms and from a leadership and governance perspective. We expect to receive the draft report in four weeks time and it should be finalised and available to the community in mid August.
