At Ashhurst School we have made enrolment a very simple process.
If not uploaded during the online enrolment, you will need to bring these documents to the office.
At Ashhurst School, we want every child’s first experience of school to be positive, supportive, and stress-free. To help our youngest learners settle in, our Board of Trustees has adopted a Cohort Entry Policy.
What is Cohort Entry?
Instead of children starting school individually on their 5th birthday, they start in small groups (cohorts) at two specific points each term:
Term Start: The first day of the school term.
Mid-Term: A date near the middle of the term (set by the Ministry of Education).
Important Note: New Zealand law states that children cannot start school until they have turned five. Therefore, if your child's birthday falls after a cohort start date, they will join the next available cohort.
2026 Cohort Start Dates
If your child is turning five this year, their start date will be determined by the following 2026 schedule:
| Term - 2026 | Start of Term Cohort Entry Date | Midterm Entry Date |
| 1 | 9th February 2026 | 9th March 2026 |
| 2 | 20th April 2026 | 1st June 2026 |
| 3 | 20th July 2026 | 24th August 2026 |
| 4 | 12th October 2026 | 16th November 2026 |
Why We Use This Model?
We believe cohort entry aligns with our school values of Whai Ngākau (showing heart) and Tū Tangata (standing tall) by providing:
Understanding School Zones (Enrolment Schemes)
A school zone, officially known as an Enrolment Scheme, is a legally defined geographic area surrounding a school. It is primarily used to manage student numbers and prevent overcrowding, ensuring that children can attend a school that is reasonably convenient to where they live.
How the Zone Works:
The most important thing for parents to know is that school zones create two categories of applicants:
In-Zone Students: If your usual place of residence is within the school’s defined boundary, your child has an absolute right to enrol at that school. The school cannot turn you away.
Out-of-Zone: Students: If you live outside the boundary, you do not have a guaranteed place. You can still apply, but your acceptance depends on whether the school has extra space available.
Out-of-Zone "Priority" and Ballots
If a school has space for out-of-zone students, they must follow a legal priority list to fill those spots:
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prove I live in-zone? Schools usually require "proof of residence," such as a long-term tenancy agreement, a sale and purchase agreement, or recent utility bills (electricity or broadband) in your name at that address.
What if I move out of the zone after my child starts? Generally, once a child is enrolled and attending, they are allowed to stay even if the family moves out of the zone. However, this may affect the "sibling priority" for younger brothers or sisters starting later.
Can I use a business address or a relative's house? No. The address must be the child's usual place of residence. Schools are required to investigate "addresses of convenience," and providing false information can lead to the cancellation of your child's enrolment.
